Service Offerings Described

After designing another web company’s website, I’ve noticed that my own website is lacking a section that describes the work I do. There are several goals I hope to achieve by describing exactly what kind of work I do and why people should contact me.

Search Engine Optimization

While I believe that any new content or blog article has a chance of ranking for a random keyword, the service offering pages were written with SEO as my primary consideration. The biggest issue that these pages will have is that A). I didn’t do a lot of research and B). I chose national search terms.

I decided to stick with national terms because I didn’t want to alienate my non-local clients. Basically I chose “Web Design Services” as opposed to “Chicago Web Design.” Most of my clients are NOT located in the Chicago area so I’m confident I made the right choice.

To Eliminate Confusion

I’ve realized that the type of work I do is not obvious. Sure, I’ve got web sites in my portfolio and some logos and a brochure, but what exactly can I offer to a potential client?

Additionally, the service descriptions will give clients a chance to read about my design/development process as well as the potential cost.

Along with every other freelancer, I’ve had problems with people not understanding the cost of a design.

Helps with Specialization

My skill set hasn’t changed, but the type of freelance work I should be doing has changed.  I’ve chosen to specialize and focus my freelance work on web design, blog design, and HTML/CSS development. I’d love to take on print assignments but I need more practice until I can feel confident charging a rate that will make me a living.

I’ll still include a section in my portfolio for print materials, and randomly post new projects there.
