A combination of factors, from my previous work experience to the decline in my job satisfaction made my decision to leave the daily grind an easy one.
My Old and Only 9 to 5 Job
My former company (Signature) makes their money primarily through online lead management. Basically a user would google ‘plastic surgeons in chicago’ and one of Signature’s websites would be in the search engine results. That user would contact Signature to arrange appointments with plastic surgeons in the area.
I was the company’s first graphic designer and it was my first full time job out of college. While this was my first full time job, I’ve had several part time design jobs and several freelance jobs in the preceding years. So I was confident is my skills, knowledge and abilities.

However, I was put repeatedly in a position that disrespected my abilities as a designer. My boss frequently disregarded my opinions and judgments on color, layout, and usability. And overrode my ideas and thoughts with what he thought would work best. I understand that this sounds a bit like a rant from a haughty designer, but the man ignored my judgments even when I presented the evidence in the form of respected articles & research.
I decided to quit my job after talking to my dad about my work and my problems with the environment. His response was along the lines that there will always be bosses and that they’re just something you have to deal with.
That’s what most people have to do, that sure is what my co-workers were doing.
From what I’ve already experienced there is an abundance of opportunities for graphic designers and web developers that don’t involve having a boss.
Next I’ll be writing about my experience getting those freelance opportunities and how I plan to find more work for the future.
